Themes in Design

Why must there always be a theme behind every aspect of art.  Who is to say one's art work/design must fit into a category?  Can one create for the sake of their own artistic expression?  Or must there always be guidelines that limits an artist's imagination in their process of design.
By all means, i know there are certain rules to follow while trying to achieve optimum design.  Why must an artist/design always have a reason for placement of objects, or choice of color, etc.?  Is the phrase "I thought it looked good," not good enough for the viewers  that is always trying to make sense of what is being seen. Why can't the work exist for what it is?

I know what you mean by something always having to have a purpose. But as you go and think about life, and how people hate to be defined as a certain group, and how people always strive to be different. You always know that there was someone else in the past that did that. And there are other people out there striving for the same goals. Meaning that everyone is categorized whether they like it or not.

If you put things randomly wherever you want, it'll probably be similar to what someone else has done before. Its hard to be different when so much has happened before us. All you can strive for is good design. Just depends I guess who thinks the design is good.

I agree at what your trying to express. The problem is that we are in a democracy, everything is "organized," even art. Unless you or a group of us re-create a DADA phase in Graphic Design, where we reject the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. What do you think?

I know what you are saying, but there needs to be some sort of focus within design. Otherwise, it's just placing objects randomly. Don't get me wrong sometimes random works out, but even then randomness is the focus.
